At last, a good sunny day to enjoy! For weeks now there has been a thick white layer of cloud skies above North Warwickshire, making us all feel a little gloomy. But yesterday, the sun shone and hinted at warmer days a head. Infact, I would go as far as to say that yesterday was t-shirt weather. I caught a glimpse of the first crocus and the bluebells are starting to put a healthy growth on in our local woods. Spring is on it’s way!
Despite the lovely weather yesterday, it was still pretty grotty on the allotment. The soil was heavy with water due to all of that snow we have just had. This made digging hard work and hoeing, impossible. Still, I manage to find several good potatoes that had over wintered in the ground – not too sure what they will taste like though.
Last year, I had planted loads of garlic; too much for me to harvest. Several bulbs were left in the ground and subsequently each clove started to sprout new shoots. Yesterday, I dug up these cloves, seperated and planted each in it’s own space on a well prepared soil. I was careful to select only the strongest and largest of the cloves to increase the chances of a good crop later on in the year. It was my intention to plant garlic cloves last October – the traditional start-month for garlic cultivation. I missed the opportunity, but transplanting ready sprouted cloves should put me back in the running.
I will look forward to a good harvest of garlic in July-August.
