Winter can be a dull time of year in the garden. All of the glorious colour of the summer months has long faded and bare soil is all around. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Snow Drops

Snow Drops

During the cold months of Winter, whenever I see a flower or two in my own garden, my spirits are instantly lifted and I feel as if Spring is on it’s way. There are plenty of bulbs that you can plant now and reap colourful rewards during the ‘dull’ season. Here are just a few to try:

Winter Aconites

Easy and quick to multiply, these little plants will swiftly create a beautiful carpet of yellow/gold under trees and shrubs, as part of mixed planting schemes in containers and window boxes, or naturalised in grass.

Snowdrops

The first flowers of a new year – Snowdrops are charming when planted in the border, in clumps and rockeries, under trees and shrubs, great in window borders containers and boxes, or in your lawn.

Other winter bulbs to try

Chionodoxa (Glory of the Snow)
Winter Iris (Iris Reticulata)
