Calibrachoa Mini Petunia Plants

If you are after a visual slap across the chops, then why not try Calibrachoa – the Mini Petunia!
The striking combination of orange, blue and yellow of these Mini Petunias plants will revitalise your patio or hanging baskets. The vibrantly colourful bell-shaped flowers smother the dense green foliage, and have been specially selected for uniformity and simultaneous flowering.

Calibrachoa, although treated as a half hardy annual,  is actually a  perennial plant (if protected during winter) with a mounding and trailing habit. It is reasonably draught resistant and will do best in a sunny spot in the garden.

You can buy a ‘3-in-1’ selection of Calibrachoa – Mini Petunia Plants from Thompson & Morgan.

Can you tell me how many mini petunia plants would be needed to fill a hanging basket. Thank.

You only need 3 or so. Mini petunias, or ‘Calibrachoa’ grow very quickly and produce quite a thick bushy plant with hundreds of flowers at any one time. Last year I planted just one Calibrachoa in a half barrel and it filled it within a month. The only reason why I’m suggesting 3 is so you can have the opportunity to mix your basket with different colours of mini-petunias. A very rewarding plant. In milder areas, you can treat them as perennial.

I noticed these mini’s last year, but it was post season. Thought I’d try again this year. Can you recommend a good nursery that will be selling them?

    Thanks much, Mike

  • James Middleton says:

Any decent garden centre may sell them as hanging basket plugs. I have seen Calibrachoa sold in the way before. You could also try Thompson and Morgan – they sell them in plug form. Failing that, there is still plenty of time to grow them from seed.
