In the past few years, I have to admit, I haven’t been too lucky with my tomatoes. They are either hit by blight which instantly blackens and kills the plants, or fruits refuse to ripen due to lack of sunshine. Always an unexpected excuse on the part of my crop!
Tomato Losetto
This year, I’m trying something different. I’ve always liked the idea of growing cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets, but never got round to it. Recently, I found a blight resistant tumbling hybrid called Tomato ‘Losetto’, which has done well in recent trials.
So far, the seeds that I planted in early April have produce very strong and vigorous plants. They have already started to bloom and I’m currently hardening them off to hang out in a few weeks. Losetto promises a high yield of sweet tomato fruits that don’t require staking or pinching out – so they are a good low maintenance crop to try.
If the idea of tomato plants hanging from your house doesn’t impress, then try mixing a few Black-eyed Susan (thunbergia) plants in with them to add more colour and interest. The yellow, orange or white flowers should make an impressive and fiery contrast with the bright scarlet fruits and mid-green leaves of the hanging basket Tomato Losetto plants. Perfect for containers or planters in the greenhouse or on the patio, but can also be planted in a sunny spot in the garden. Height and spread: 30cm (12″).
