Dry Weather

By James Middleton - Added 13th of May 2008

From one extreme to another

Only 10 days or so ago, I was knee deep in very wet mud, digging trenches in a desperate attempt to irrigate water off my plot. The water has now gone, but we are suffering from a draught. I shouldn't really complain though; During the wet whether I collected as much water as I could and sunk a few well (plastic barrels, full of holes, submerged below the ground level). I just hope, for the sake of my garden and dwindling water supply, that you have a little rain this week. It has been fore-casted for Thursday (15th May 2008).

Since the warm, sunny weather started a week or two ago, I have noticed a sudden surge in growth in everything green. My broad beans that I planted last Autumn have shot up and my Japanese onions, again set last Autumn look set to ripen in the next couple of weeks.

Weeding the allotment

Of course, not only are the vegetables growing well at the moment, so are the weeds. Most of us dread weeding, but I'd suggest putting this task off for another week. Wait until the second or third leaves start to appear on any wee seedlings and then use a hole to cut them at ground level. It's not a good idea to weed every day as this will soon seem a burden rather than a pleasure. Weed every 14 days; spend a day just doing that. Make sure your hoe is nice and sharp and sharpen the blade every 30 minutes for an effected stroke.
