The Middleton Allotment

By James Middleton - Added 19th of May 2008

A break in the dry weather

At last rain! Two weeks of very lovely, but dry weather caused my water supplies to take a dip on the Gun Hill Allotment. I was having to thoroughly water my young veggies every evening. Now I can take a break from it all and let nature do at least some of the hard work for me.

Unlike late April, the rain fell softly over a 48 hour period, giving the land the opportunity to soak it up without any loss or run off. No flooding this time.

Protect your plants from a cold snap!

The rain has brought with it a slight south easterly cold snap. I don't think we'll be seeing a hard frost, but a mild frost has been reported in rural areas around the UK. So if you have any tender plants out on your allotment, it would be a good idea to protect them. One thing you could try is laying newspaper over night on to tender crops and remove them by morning. Don't forget to anchor down the paper to prevent it from blowing away.

It's still a bit too early to put out tomatoes, squashes and sweetcorn; I'd leave it another week or two, or at least until the weather at night at warmed up a little.
